Sept 01 – Sept 07
Without expectation there is no disappointment
So, you went to a party because you thought the DJ was going to be a beast, but all he ended up doing is playing his soft “poppy”ish stuff and now you feel totally bummed out… Don’t be, look at it this way, if you didn’t go out, you would have stayed at home. On the other hand, if all of your friends went to see someone else, and you didn’t go cause you wanted to see this dj; then there is a problem. You see, in life, there are always going to be another party, another tour date, another dj that will come in to town, but friends are a little harder to come by. Enjoy the, as much as possible and share the best with them. I would rather see a sucky DJ with all my friends than… let’s say…. Bassnecter alone; BUT, if you can, go see Bassnecter with all your friends! Enjoy life, it’s a celebration bitches! - r

There are trance DJs who can rock a party, a club, a festival. And there are acts that can write songs that will bring out the goose bumps in you. But there's only one band that can do both: Above & Beyond. This three piece have remixed Madonna, won Essential Mix of the Year, and played to one million people in Rio de Janeiro. More importantly they've written songs with the power and the melody to en-trance that one million-strong crowd, many of who were singing along, word for word.

After years in the making here at last is Illumination, the fully realised debut album from Melbourne’s favourite psychedelic indie-electronic adventurers Miami Horror. With Illumination, Miami Horror has delivered on two years of teeth-cutting live shows and an ever escalating wave of buzz that’s made the group bonafide blog darlings the world over. But what’s most amazing about the grand arrival of Illumination is that the roots of the record stretch back countless moons to when Miami Horror began as just one synthesizer-obsessed producer huddled over a laptop in a bedroom-come-studio and the album itself just a spark waiting to be lit.

Paul Oakenfold’ musical career started from admirably humble beginnings, playing soul and rare groove cuts in a Covent Garden wine bar in the late ‘eventies with mate Trevor Fung. By the early ’eighties, having decided that NYC was the place, Paul decamped there armed only with the chutzpah to blag his way into a courier’ job in West Harlem. At that time, more than any other, New York was bursting with musical invention: hip-hop was the freshest street sound around, and Larry Levan – arguably the first ever superstar DJ, inspiring a frenzy in the crowd that some guy playing records had never inspired before – was packing out the Paradise Garage every week with the revolutionary, hypnotic mixing style that would become the acid house DJ’ stock in trade.
